Morning arrival. Fast-track visa service provided on arrival.

You are met outside the terminal by your Travel Expert and escorted to your hotel by luxury vehicle and check into your hotel in town.

After settling in and feeling refreshed we journey back in time to experience the recent tragic history of Cambodia with a visit to the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), a former high school. In the Pol Pot era this school was transformed into a prison that was notorious for the horrific torture of prisoners. After interrogation the prisoners were then transferred to the killing Fields of Cheung Ek, to be killed.

(Note: We feel that a visit to Tuol Sleng is enough to learn about the tragic history, and with significant increase in heavy traffic to get to the Killing Fields, we no longer include this as standard. However please let us know if you wish to go and we will include for you on this day)

After this sobering experience, we then cheer ourselves up with a visit to the nearby Russian Market (Psah Tuol Tom Pong), a lively indoor and outdoor market where you will find antiquities, silver and gold jewellery, gems, silk, kramars, stone and wood carvings, as well as T-Shirts, and cheap designer clothing and accessories (of varying quality) that have found their way there from the Phnom Penh garment factories. Return to Hotel thereafter.

Phnom Penh itself has become an epic fast-growing vibrant and trendy urban centre with a vibrant nightlife to match. Combining exotic local street food and lively nightlife, enjoy the sights, smells, sounds, tastes, and atmosphere of Phnom Penh on an evening cuisine tour by tuk tuk (known locally as a ‘remok’).

Led by an informative local guide, start with a cocktail while soaking up the stunning panoramic views of this fast-developing city, before making multiple stops to local markets and small street-side vendors; tasting the very best of Cambodian street food. For the main meal, sample traditional cuisine while listening to songs from the 1960s, Cambodia’s golden era of music, at a vibrant live music restaurant.

After one final secret dessert stop, return to the hotel or continue to one of Phnom Penh’s trendy late-night spots.

This morning, visit the Royal Palace, which was built in 1866 by King Norodom. We recommend an early start (0700) to be one of the first to enter.

The Palace is actually a number of structures within a pagoda-style compound. The Silver Pagoda located within the Royal Palace compound, the Silver Pagoda is so names because of its floor, which is made up of 5,000 silver tiles. The treasures are a solid gold Buddha encrusted with 9, 584 diamonds and weighing 90kilos and a small 17th century emerald and baccarat crystal Buddha.

Note: During the visit of the Royal Palace, visitors are required to wear a proper attire, covering shoulders and knees as this place is still considered as a sacred site (no short, miniskirt or short trousers).

Continue to visit the National Museum, which houses Khmer art especially sculptures, from different periods of Cambodian history, 19th century dance costumes, royal barges and palanquins. Over 5000 objects are on display including Angkorian era statues, lingas and other artifacts, most notably the legendary status of the ‘leper King.’ Though the emphasis is on Angkorian artifacts, there is also a good collection of pieces from later periods, including a special exhibition of post-Angkorian Buddha figures.

Return to hotel and enjoy lunch at leisure.

This afternoon we take a “Four Religions” architectural tour by rickshaw. This program explores central Phnom Penh eclectic mix of colonial buildings as well as modern, post-independence architecture.

Meant to be a brief historical introduction to the city, the tour includes a selection of well-known buildings as well as some less obvious examples, of religious Architecture.

We explore the district around the old Post Office, followed by the area south-east of the Central Market. Traveling by rickshaw is a special way to experience the streets and buildings of the city.

We will enter some buildings and see others from the the street as well as exploring on foot. This is a responsible tour that also supports the local community with job opportunities as the guides are architecture students or graduates providing a unique insight into the city’s urban fabric.

We finish the tour with sundowners and dinner at an iconic riverside location. We then continue to enjoy a show by the world famous Cambodia Living Arts.

This morning we visit the site of Wat Phnom which marks the legendary founding place of Phnom Penh. An attractive and vibrant area with a small hill and a working Pagoda on top, your expert guide will regale you with history and myths and legends abound.

Then in the afternoon we fly to Siem Reap (schedule TBC), and transfer in to your hotel on arrival.

Afternoon activities can be arranged pending the timing of the flight arrival into Siem Reap.

If time this afternoon is relatively short we take a short drive out to the school of Bokator.

Bokator, known formally as Labokator, is a Khmer material art form that involves close hand-to-hand combat, ground techniques, and weapons. Bokator is one of the earliest Khmer material art and second in age only to the Mon-Khmer style of Yuthakun Khom. Moreover, this martial art is said to be the close quarter combat system used by the armies during the Angkor era. Practitioners are trained to strike with knees, elbows, hands feet, and even the head. Short sticks are commonly used as a weapon.

During the dark time of the Pol Pot regime (1975-1979) those who practiced traditional arts were either systematically exterminated by the Khmer Rouge, fled as refugees or stopped teaching and hid. After the Khmer Rouge regime, the Vietnamese occupation of Cambodia started and native martial arts were completely outlawed. Its only since 2004 that the art form began a resurgence thanks to the return of Bokator’s grandmaster, who fled the country in the 1970s.

We witness a training session at the school, meet the participants and learn more about this ancient art form.

Note: With special permission Asia Concierge can arrange a private Bokator performance at one of the outer Angkor temples or a nearby local pagoda for an intimate and personable experience.

This evening we have a superb introduction to Siem Reap with a dinner at one of the finest restaurants in town, before we continue to the theatre for a top performance viewing of the locally famed Phare Circus (best seats). ]

Return to hotel thereafter.

We highly recommend an early (5am) departure in our own luxury customised ‘tuk tuk’ for a pre-dawn drive through the forests towards Angkor Wat’s East Gate. Led by torchlight we walk in the dark through the secluded East Gate to Angkor Wat itself. As the sun rises with first light on the temple we sit and ponder its magnificence whilst enjoying fresh coffee, juice, croissants and breakfast snacks with our own table setting, hidden away in privacy.

One very personal way to experience the spirituality of Angkor in even more depth is to participate in a Buddhist blessing ceremony. A monk blessing is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years in Cambodia, and is performed for special occasions and auspicious dates, as well as any average day and for any person who would like to be blessed. We arrange this solemn experience in a private location within Angkor Wat on a request basis.

After exploring Angkor Wat we continue on road by our ‘tuk tuk’ to Sra Srang (the baray, or reservoir of Angkor), to either Sala Kdei Wooden House or Aman Wooden House for breakfast.

Afterwards, we continue by tuk tuk and then walk to the deserted North Gate of Ta Phrom where we disembark our to walk through the pristine forest to visit Ta Phrom temple.

Walking through the temple in reverse allows us to better experience Ta Phrom opposite to any crowds. Return to the hotel by tuk tuk for lunch and time at leisure.

In the mid-afternoon, we continue to explore the temples, starting at the remote Eastern Gate, known ominously as the Gate of Death. From here we commence a short climb up the walls of Angkor Thom’s giant moat. 12kms in length, the wall is an attraction on its own. We walk along a short 500m stretch of the rampart to arguably the finest and best preserved gate of Angkor Thom – the Victory Gate.

From here we descend to end our temple visit at the mighty Bayon. This 12th century masterpiece lies at the very center of Angkor Thom and is an archaeological wonder of symmetry and grandeur. We wander this magnificent site until dusk and is reclaimed by the forest for the night.

In the evening your Travel Expert will take you on a Taste of Siem Reap dine around by tuk tuk (3 courses at 3 different restaurants.) which affords a wide overview of the finer elements of modern day Khmer cuisine.

This morning we head back into Angkor and ascend the mountain temple of Bakheng. Affording stunning panoramic views, we have an extra special “behind the scenes” tour with our resident Archaeological expert with the World Monuments Fund - Ginevra Boatto, to gain fascinating new insights into one of the worlds most treasured archaeological sites.

World Monuments Fund, founded in 1965, is the leading independent organization dedicated to saving the world’s most treasured places. WMF has completed more than 600 projects in 90 countries. One of WMF’s most important activities has been its work at Angkor, which began in 1989.

Ginevra Boatto studied science and technology for cultural heritage at University of Padua, Italy. She received a fellowship from Leica Geosystems to conduct a research on the integrated use of 3D data and thermal infrared images. She earned her PhD in 2010 in the field of 3D virtual reconstruction of anthropological and archaeological heritage. In 2010 she joined a Cambodian NGO in Phnom Penh as management advisor. Ms. Boatto finally joined World Monuments Fund in Cambodia at the beginning of 2012 and is currently in the position of Representative, Southeast Asia.

After our in-depth visit, we head back to Siem Reap and stop at the Tlai Tno Association. The Association is a small non-profit set up with international and local support with a vision to enable Khmer artists to perform high quality traditional Cambodian music and dance as a career in comfortable working conditions. They accomplish this by teaching them age old skills and techniques to become independent traditional Cambodia art performers.

Meaning “dignity” in Khmer, TlaiTno operate from a small covered stage set behind a traditional wooden house on a quite village road near the beautiful Preah Enkosai pagoda in Siem Reap. The setting and location is an authentic experience in itself.

TlaiTno is more than just another dance show as we take you behind the scenes with the performers as a skilled teacher guides us through an introduction to traditional Khmer musical instruments and a step by step guide through traditional dance movements and postures. The experience gives an insight into the complexity and depth of Khmer dance, its rich meaning and how it relates to great Hindi epics such as the famous Ramayana.

Return to Hotel for lunch. Free afternoon at leisure or return to Angkor to explore other temple sites as recommended by your Travel Expert.

This morning we are hosted by Marina Pok, creative director founder of Anicca Foundation. One of the most prominent art experts in Cambodia, we journey around Siem Reap to visit various art galleries (TBC) in town whilst Marina provides valuable and in-depth explanations. We then continue out to the Countryside to meet one of the artists at his home and gain a deep insight and understanding to his work and the history of the individual.

Continue to Theams House for a hosted visit by Maddy Lim. Theams House is the new gallery and atelier of Cambodian artist and designer Lim Muy Theam, a restlessly creative individual who is one of the driving forces in the Cambodian arts and crafts scene. His talent and work can be seen in every aspect of his stunning self-designed studio/home. His collection include lacquers, painting, and sculptures, with pieces that are uniquely expressive of Theam while also maintaining a strong Khmer ethic. He has created a new aesthetic; drawing and paintings on both Khmer traditional and contemporary international designs hoping to breathe new life into Cambodian handicrafts.

Visitors can watch his artisans in the process of creating lacquers, painting and sculptures or browse through his stunning showroom and shop to look for a truly unique piece of modern Cambodia to take home. We arrange a special escorted tour of the Atelier with Theams sister Maddy who will tell you Theams story and offer insights into Khmer arts and crafts.

Return to Hotel and free time for lunch.

This afternoon we take a drive out to the lifeblood of Cambodia, the vast Tonle Sap Lake. We board our small private boat and take a cruise of the famous mangroves and stilted village of Kompong Phluk taking in the sights of the lake including enjoying some snacks and drinks along the way.

Return to Siem Reap and enjoy a farewell dinner with a cultural performance by Bambu Stage (TBC).

Afterwards, perhaps wander to the new trendy bar and restaurant area of “Street 26” for some after dinner drinks.

Travel Designer Insights

The focus on the two main centres of Cambodia provides the visitor a greater understanding on the country’s vast historical and cultural background as well as its more recent tragic past and an in-depth focus into the Arts. Whilst this program encompasses the main sites it also builds in a mix of lesser visited locations and unique artistic experiences to broaden the scope of what is certainly much more in-depth than a highlights tour.
