Beijing
China
day
1

Our journey begins in Beijing, a city where imperial grandeur sits beside contemporary energy. Upon landing, make your way through immigration, collect your luggage and meet your travel expert just outside the arrivals hall. A private transfer brings you to the city, where your hotel offers space to rest and settle in. The afternoon is left open for adjustment, allowing time to ease into China’s atmospheric capital.

As dusk approaches, we head into Beijing’s historic hutongs, where a quiet courtyard tea house awaits. The setting is tranquil; lantern light and wooden screens create soothing warmth. Here, a tea master leads a traditional ceremony, sharing the foundations of gongfu tea. We learn how water temperature, aroma and movement shape expression, using jasmine or pu’er tea as our guide. The ceremony is not simply about flavour but about presence.

After tea, we stroll through nearby Beihai Park, once an imperial space where scholars, monks and emperors found respite. The lake reflects temple pavilions and willow branches, offering a peaceful introduction to China’s sacred landscapes. The walk encourages slow observation — a moment to absorb place and stillness.

Returning to your hotel, the city’s hum fades, and the evening concludes gently. This arrival sets our tone — unhurried, reflective and curious, attuned to both ritual and space. The journey ahead will weave together body, landscape and living practice as we step further into China’s spiritual heritage

Temple of Heaven
The Great Wall
Beijing

day
2

We begin the morning at the Temple of Heaven, a masterpiece of imperial architecture symbolising harmony between heaven and earth. Under the shade of ancient cypress trees, a Tai Chi master guides us through foundational movements. Each gesture flows into the next, encouraging balance, breath and quiet focus — a gentle introduction to the spiritual rhythm of the day.

Next, we travel to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, known for its sweeping views and peaceful atmosphere. A cable car brings us up to the wall, where we walk along stone pathways that stretch across mountain ridges. The landscape feels endless, and the simplicity of each step offers a moment of meditation in motion.

At one of the watchtowers, light snacks and champagne await. We pause to take in the views — layers of forested hills folding into one another — and enjoy a refined moment in one of the most iconic settings in the world.

In the afternoon, we continue to the Lama Temple (Yonghe Temple), one of Beijing’s most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Incense drifts through courtyards lined with red-and-gold halls, and the sound of soft chanting creates an atmosphere of calm devotion. We walk slowly between prayer wheels, carved archways and quiet chambers that house ancient statues, including a towering Maitreya Buddha carved from a single piece of sandalwood. The temple feels both intimate and grand — a living sanctuary where tradition and daily practice meet.

We return to the hotel as the day softens, bringing together movement, reflection and sacred space. Today blends physical awareness with cultural insight, offering a balanced introduction to China’s spiritual landscape.

Traditional Chinese Calligraphy
Beijing - Zhengzhou
China
day
3

Your travel expert meets you at your hotel this morning and transfers you to Beijing West Railway Station. There, you board a high-speed train bound for Zhengzhou, passing through plains, river valleys and quiet rural towns. The journey is smooth and reflective, offering time to relax after Beijing’s intensity and ease into a slower rhythm as we head deeper into Henan Province.

Upon arrival in Zhengzhou, you are met off the train by a local travel expert and transferred to your hotel. After settling in, we visit a traditional calligraphy studio, an ideal setting to connect with Chinese cultural roots. Here, brush, ink, paper and posture become more than tools—they are a practice in focus and calm. A master calligrapher shows us how pressure and movement affect the line, encouraging precision, patience and fluidity. As we try writing characters ourselves, guided by breath and deliberate motion, we begin to appreciate calligraphy as both an art and a philosophy.

Later, we travel to the banks of the Yellow River, often known as the “Mother River” due to its role in sustaining Chinese civilisation. The river is broad and steady, its muted colour shaped by centuries of silt. Sitting with light snacks and refreshments, we watch the current move at its own pace. The landscape feels both vast and grounding, offering a quiet space to reflect. Here, the river becomes a simple reminder of continuity, a natural thread linking past and present.

As the light fades and the air cools, we return to your hotel. The day has been gentle but meaningful, setting a thoughtful tone for what lies ahead. Tonight, we rest in preparation for a deeper exploration of China’s spiritual heritage—where traditions endure, and reflection plays as important a role as discovery.

Shaolin Monk
Zhengzhou
China
day
4

Today we travel to the foothills of Songshan to visit Shaolin Temple, birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and the cradle of Chinese martial arts. Here, spirituality and physical discipline coexist, shaped by centuries of practice and dedication.

We begin by exploring the temple grounds — from the Hall of Heavenly Kings to the Dharma Hall. Carved scriptures and frescoes trace the journey of Bodhidharma and the development of Zen. The environment blends structure and energy, where monks have trained body and mind in unison for centuries.

We observe young disciples in training, their movements precise and powerful. Each kick, stance and transition reflects years of quiet repetition and inward focus. The discipline is both stark and inspiring, revealing how the physical path can be a spiritual one. A plant-based lunch is enjoyed nearby, in keeping with monastic tradition. We continue to the Pagoda Forest — a burial site for generations of Shaolin monks. Stone pagodas, each unique in form, stand among pines and gravel paths, embodying lives dedicated to stillness and insight.

In the afternoon, we join a senior instructor for a private introduction to Chan principles. Rather than a lecture, the teaching takes shape through simple stories or direct gestures — embodying truth beyond words. That is the essence of Chan: not in doctrine, but in direct experience.

Returning to Zhengzhou, we carry a deepened appreciation for practice as devotion. Shaolin is no myth; it is a living way — one that continues to shape its monks and surroundings through stillness, strength and presence.

Today we return to Songshan, this time with a focus on Taoist traditions. Our first destination is Zhongyue Temple, one of China’s most significant Taoist temples, dedicated to the mountain god. What stands here is more than architecture — it is a spatial expression of harmony, where stone gates, carved beams and age-old cypress trees create a poetic balance.

We walk through its courtyards slowly, letting the senses adjust to the quiet, the air and the implied teachings. Harmony in Taoism is not declared but sensed — through proportion, shadow and breath.

From the temple, we set off along a mountain path. The walk is gentle but immersive — stone steps, cool air, evergreen branches rustling overhead. At a quiet lookout point, tea and light snacks are laid out. The combination of mountain air and silent tea offers space to reconnect with natural rhythms.

In the afternoon, we visit Songyang Academy. Once a scholarly centre where Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist thinkers overlap, it now stands as a reminder of how philosophy, education and nature intertwined in classical China. The setting — modest halls, stone tablets, ancient gingkos — encourages thoughtfulness rather than display.

We return to Zhengzhou with a sense of stillness retained from the mountain. Today’s experiences unfold across landscape and learning, showing how Taoism values alignment with nature rather than mastery of it. It’s a different kind of practice — one where patience communicates more than words, and where feeling becomes a pathway to knowledge.

Yingtian Gate
Zhengzhou - Luoyang
China
day
6

This morning, we leave Zhengzhou and travel to Luoyang, one of China’s ancient capitals and an early centre of Buddhism. The drive introduces us to a quieter landscape of rural plains and village life — a shift that begins to slow the pace of our journey.

Upon arrival, we head straight to Yingtian Gate, the reconstructed southern entrance to ancient Luoyang. Originally used during the Sui and Tang dynasties, this monumental structure once welcomed travellers and dignitaries into the empire’s cultural heart. The modern reconstruction reflects the elegance and scale of imperial architecture, offering elevated views across the cityscape and surrounding historical sites. From its ramparts, it's easy to imagine the rhythms of Luoyang at its height.

After time at the gate, we transfer to your hotel, where you can check in and freshen up before heading back out to continue our exploration.

We then visit White Horse Temple, considered China’s first Buddhist temple. Established in the 1st century CE, it marks the official arrival of Buddhism in China. The temple’s layout is calm and orderly, with traditional halls, statues and courtyards offering a peaceful introduction to the adaptation of Buddhist teachings in Chinese culture.

In addition to the original complex, the temple now includes Thai, Indian and Myanmar-style halls, each reflecting how Buddhism has evolved across regions while retaining shared principles.

After returning to the hotel, the remainder of the day is yours to enjoy. You may choose to walk Luoyang’s historic streets, visit nearby markets or tea houses, or simply rest and reflect in the comfort of the hotel.

day
7

Today, we journey to the Longmen Grottoes, one of China’s most remarkable achievements in Buddhist art. Carved into limestone cliffs along the Yi River, these thousands of statues and grottoes date from the Northern Wei to Tang dynasties, representing centuries of devotion and artistic evolution.

Our visit begins at the impressive Fengxian Temple, home to a colossal seated Buddha framed by bodhisattvas and guardian figures. Despite its monumental scale, the expression is calm and dignified, inviting quiet contemplation. Close inspection reveals intricate drapery and detail — a testament to the skill and dedication of ancient artisans.

We continue along the cliffside path, stopping to view smaller niches and reliefs that depict myriad figures in various poses. Some are weathered, softened by time, while others are remarkably preserved — each one offering insight into the era’s spiritual and cultural life. The repetition of images, carved by countless hands, gives a sense of collective devotion across generations.

Crossing the bridge to the opposite bank, we take in the panoramic view of the grottoes reflected in the river. From here, the site takes on a grand sense of scale and setting — art in direct dialogue with the landscape. The river flows gently below, adding a natural rhythm to the stillness of stone and sky.

After our visit, we return to the hotel. The remainder of the day is free, allowing time to relax or explore Luoyang at your own pace. You may wish to revisit the riverfront, spend time in the city’s quieter neighbourhoods or simply unwind.

Mount Tai
Luoyang - Tai'an
China
day
8

We leave Luoyang this morning and travel by road to Tai’an, a city at the foot of Mount Tai, one of China’s most sacred mountains. This shift takes us from the Buddhist landscape of Luoyang toward a place of ascent, ritual and renewal.

Our journey begins through the countryside of Henan, where fields and villages reveal everyday rhythms of life. Midway, we stop in Kaifeng, once a capital of the Northern Song Dynasty. Here, we visit the Iron Pagoda — a striking tower erected in 1049. Despite its name, the pagoda is made from glazed bricks that resemble aged iron. Its detailed reliefs and elegant design reflect both the skill and beliefs of the Song era. The surrounding park is calm and atmospheric, offering a moment to pause and reflect before we continue eastward.

As we cross into Shandong province, Mount Tai gradually comes into view. Rising from the plains, its presence is unmistakable — a mountain long associated with worship, imperial ceremonies and the meeting of heaven and earth.

It has been climbed by emperors and pilgrims for thousands of years and remains a powerful symbol of endurance and devotion. We arrive in Tai’an by evening and check into the hotel. The rest of the night is free — time for dinner, a peaceful walk or simply a quiet rest ahead of tomorrow’s ascent.

Today, we have travelled through layers of heritage and belief, moving from the serene river valleys of Henan to the base of one of China’s most important sacred sites. We now stand at the threshold of Mount Tai — a place where the natural world and human aspiration come together.

We begin our day at the Red Gate, located at the base of Mount Tai. This mountain is one of China’s Five Sacred Peaks — a place of ritual, pilgrimage and reflection for more than three thousand years. Emperors once climbed these slopes to make offerings to heaven and earth, seeking auspicious favour for the empire. Poets and scholars followed, chasing inspiration among the cliffs and pine forests, each adding their own voice to the mountain’s legacy.

Our ascent follows the traditional pilgrimage route, a path of carved stone steps that unfold gradually through ancient groves of pine. Red Gate signals the start of this time-honoured climb. Along the way, small shrines, carved inscriptions and weathered waypoints appear, marking moments of devotion left by generations of seekers. The pace is measured, allowing for breath, conversation or quiet observation. The higher we go, the more the landscape shifts — from village outskirts to the rugged spine of the mountain.

After a steady climb, we arrive at the South Heavenly Gate, a symbolic threshold between the earthly world and the sacred summit. From here, the view opens dramatically, with clouds often drifting below us and distant peaks cutting across the horizon. The air is lighter, the stillness more palpable. For many, this point marks both a physical and spiritual breakthrough.

We spend time exploring the summit, where ancient altars and temples are set amidst rocks shaped by centuries of wind and worship. Stele carved with imperial decrees honour the mountain, while ceremonial sites speak to Mount Tai’s role in the rituals of state and spirituality alike. Here, we have time to reflect, take photographs, or simply sit and appreciate the vastness around us — a space where the natural and the divine seem to meet.

Our descent is by cable car, offering a gentle glide back through the layers of pine, stone and movement we traversed earlier. Returning to Tai’an, there is a sense of quiet accomplishment. The climb becomes part of our story — a moment of physical exertion, cultural encounter and inner grounding.

10

We check out of the hotel in Tai’an this morning and begin with a visit to the Dai Temple (Daimiao), the grand ceremonial complex dedicated to the deity of Mount Tai. For centuries, emperors came here to perform rituals before ascending the sacred mountain, seeking blessings for prosperity, harmony and divine favour. Its vast courtyards, ancient cypress groves and richly decorated halls create a powerful sense of continuity. Murals depicting celestial realms and carved stelae record centuries of devotion, revealing the deep bond between Mount Tai, ritual practice and imperial authority.

After exploring the temple, we continue by road to Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius and the living heart of Confucian philosophy. The journey takes us through gentle countryside before arriving in a city shaped by scholarship, ceremony and reflection.

In the afternoon, we visit the Confucius Temple, one of China’s most important cultural sites. Expanded over generations, the complex unfolds through a series of courtyards lined with ancient cypress trees and carved memorial tablets. Its architecture reflects the core principles of Confucian thought — order, respect and harmony. As we walk beneath its ceremonial archways, we gain insight into how the philosopher’s teachings shaped governance, education and daily life for centuries.

We then explore the Kong Family Mansion, home to Confucius’ descendants for more than seventy generations. Its network of study rooms, ancestral halls and quiet courtyards reveals a life centred on ritual observance, learning and lineage. Here, tradition was not only honoured but lived, offering a rare window into a world guided by inherited responsibility and moral practice.

After the visit, we check into the hotel in Qufu. The evening is free to explore the old town’s lantern-lit lanes, enjoy dinner at leisure or simply rest. Qufu’s calm rhythm provides a gentle space to reflect on a day shaped by ceremony, legacy and living philosophy.

day
11

We begin the day with a private transfer from the hotel to Qufu Railway Station, marking the start of a notable shift in our journey. Boarding a high-speed train, we travel eastward toward Shanghai — a city synonymous with modern China, known for its dynamic pace, glittering skyline and cultural diversity. As the train accelerates, we watch the quiet foothills of Mount Tai fade into rolling plains and eventually the urban sprawl of one of the world’s most energetic metropolises.

The journey itself is a reflection of China’s varied terrain and history. It is a passage that connects the ancient centre of ritual and reflection with a global hub of commerce, creativity and reinvention. This movement becomes symbolic — a transition from the stillness of sacred heights to the rhythm of a city that never seems to pause. It’s a moment to reflect on the contrasts that define the country: geography, belief systems, and the aspirations that shape its modern identity.

Upon arrival at the bustling Shanghai Hongqiao Station, we are met by a local travel expert who escorts us to the hotel. Once checked in, the rest of the day is free. You may choose to head to the Bund, where colonial-era architecture stands against luminous towers across the river — a visual dialogue between past and future. Or perhaps wander through the leafy boulevards of the French Concession, a neighbourhood filled with boutique shops, quiet cafes and Art Deco villas that carry the imprint of another era.

For those drawn to culture, Shanghai’s museums and galleries offer insight into contemporary art, design and history. Alternatively, you might prefer to step into a hidden tea room or browse a market where old Shanghai still whispers in between the souvenir stalls.

Tonight is open-ended, offering time to dine at leisure — perhaps sampling local delicacies or enjoying international cuisine — or simply to relax and absorb the shift in energy, from the contemplative calm of Mount Tai to the vivid pulse of Shanghai’s cityscape.

Our final day begins with a visit to the Jade Buddha Temple, an island of peace nestled in the heart of Shanghai. Known for its two rare jade Buddha statues from Myanmar, the temple radiates a calm that contrasts beautifully with the city’s lively pace. We observe incense offerings, prayer rituals and the quiet flow of worshippers moving through its wooden halls.

From here, we continue to a traditional Chinese medicine clinic for a private consultation. A licensed practitioner introduces the philosophy and method behind this ancient healing system — examining qi flow, observing diagnostics through pulse and tongue, and discussing the balance between physical and emotional well-being. It’s an internal closing ritual that brings our journey full circle: spiritual practice meeting embodied wisdom.

Following the session, we return to the hotel to collect our belongings. A private transfer then takes us to the airport for the international flight home.

Our time across China has taken us from sacred mountains and ancient grottoes to calligraphy studios, tea houses and temples — moving us through outer landscapes into inner clarity. Though the itinerary concludes here, the journey carries forward in thought, balance and memory.
