Morning arrival. Fast-track visa service provided on arrival. You are met outside the terminal by your Travel Expert and escorted to your hotel by luxury vehicle and free time to relax.

This afternoon we visit the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), a former high school. In the Pol Pot time they took this school as a prison for detentions and torture of prisoners. After interrogation the prisoners were transferred to Cheung Ek, to be killed.

After this sobering experience, we then cheer ourselves up with a visit to the nearby Russian Market (Psah Tuol Tom Pong), a lively indoor and outdoor market where you will find antiquities, silver and gold jewellery, gems, silk, kramars, stone and wood carvings, as well as T-Shirts, and cheap designer clothing and accessories (of varying quality) that have found their way there from the Phnom Penh Garment factories.

Evening BBQ and Street Food Tour, (private tour):

Combining exotic local street food and lively nightlife, enjoy the sights, smells, sounds, tastes, and atmosphere of Phnom Penh on an evening tour by tuk tuk, known locally as a ‘remok’.

Led by an informative local guide, start with a cocktail while soaking up the stunning panoramic views of this fast-developing city, before making multiple stops to local markets and small street-side vendors; tasting the very best of Cambodian street food. For the main meal, sample traditional cuisine while listening to songs from the 1960s, Cambodia’s golden era of music, at a vibrant live music restaurant.

After one final secret dessert stop, return to the hotel or continue to one of Phnom Penh’s trendy late-night spots

Option to visit the Royal Palace / Silver Pagoda early in the morning (before the crowds).

Departing Phnom Penh we being our journey with a 3 hour drive to the charming riverside town of Kampot.

En route we make a diversion to Bokor Mountain, which provides a dramatic backdrop to Kampot, and where sits the remnants of Cambodia’s glory days.

Once a resort for French colonialists in the 1920’s before becoming a getaway for Cambodia’s elite, then a hideout for the Khmer Rouge, the abandoned Bokor Hill Station today stands as a reminder of the country’s fall. Because of the vantage points it offered, its remote location and proximity to Vietnam, it remained a Khmer Rouge stronghold until the early 1990s, with pockets of soldiers seeking refuge in the isolated area.

As peace and stability spread across Cambodia, Bokor Hill Station saw something of a resurrection, with visitors trickling back up the mountain to discover the remnants of a bygone past. Despite their dilapidated state, the empty buildings remain intact and are open for visitors to explore.

Further down the mountain and requiring a short 1km walk, lies Popokvil waterfall. Meaning ‘swirling clouds, the falls and landscape seem perpetually covered in a thick mist, further adding to its allure and tranquility.

Kampot is a further one hour from here. Arriving at Kampot in the mid to late afternoon, we check into the hotel and enjoy a stroll along the riverside, before embarking on a sunset cocktail boat ride exploring the lush river setting.

Luxury has come to Kampot in the form of the Amber Resort, located on the riverbank and delivering a fine dining, Khmer wellness treatment and private pool villa experience. Dinner options at one of the many delightful riverside restaurants. .

This morning we take a tour by remork (tuk tuk) and explore the attractive countryside around Kampot whilst learning about some of the traditional industries that make the region unique in Cambodia.

Located some 8kms from Kampot town, likes the small township of Kompong Trach. Nearby here, nestled into the limestone peaks are a series of caves which have been turned into various religious shrines and pagodas over the centuries. We visit Wat Kirisan built into the bottom of Phnom Sor, the cave of a thousand rice fields, and finally the sacred and secret temple of Phnom Chhnork. Phnom Chhnork is a Hindu cave temple built in the 7th century dedicated to the goddess Shiva.

The temple’s brickwork (Funan era) is in superb condition thanks to the protection afforded by the cave. Inside the cave you’ll be greeted by a stalactite elephant, with a second elephant outlined on the flat cliff face to the right. Tiny chirping bats live up near two natural chimneys that soar towards the blue sky, partly blocked by foliage of an impossibly green hue.

Whilst the cave temple is interesting in itself the highlight is its rural location. The walk out to the cave through verdant rice fields and the steps up afford delightful views of the Cambodia countryside.

We then continue to drive onto Kep for 40 minutes in time for lunch at either the world-famous crab market or the charming Sailing Club Ocean-view restaurant.

Afterwards we can explore some of the dilapidated French colonial ruins including the Kings Palace and perhaps take a circular walk (3.1kms) around parts of Kep National Park. with its beautiful wildflowers and coastal views.

Returning to Kampot in the late afternoon is an ideal time to enjoy its charming French colonial architecture and the art, boutique and café scene or find a spot by the waterway to watch the daily fleet of fishing vessels from the nearby local Cham fishing village cruising downriver.

Return to your hotel and enjoy the diverse cuisine of Kampot in your own time.

After breakfast we drive a short distance out of town to visit a local pepper farm.

Farmers in Kampot have multiple generations of experience in pepper cultivation and produce the highest quality pepper employing a combination of traditional and modern methods, and there has been a significant renaissance in recent times as Kampot pepper is now again recognised as the best in the World.

After our visit we take the longest drive of the trip as we head west for approximately four hours to the seaside city of Sihanoukville.

As the town has become heavily developed we avoid spending time here and head straight to the pier where we board our boat to one of Cambodia’s premier Island resorts - a far cry from the mainland.

For the discerning traveller without budget considerations, there are three acclaimed 5* luxury resorts to choose from, each unique in their own way.

It can be argued that Cambodia is now one of the best and most accessible beach destinations in Asia - and there’s a lot of competition…. you will not be disappointed. Avoiding crowds and enjoying the beach in peace and quiet is not an issue here, as there have never yet been crowds to avoid. As there is little to do here except to enjoy the sheer natural beauty of your island of choice and the facilities of the resort, the days are spent entirely at your leisure.
