A 5 day / 4 night extension to East Bali
A 5 day / 4 night extension to East Bali
Traditional villages which offer a vista of steep hillsides with elegant cascading rice terraces, paired with unspoilt beaches, are the order for this five day escape to eastern Bali.
Untouched by modernisation, the area is a far cry away from Bali’s southern beaches and central Ubud, with life in the east still very much unchanged from the Bali of yesteryear.
Your time in East Bali is split between Sidemen & Candidasa, allowing you to experience both the countryside and beaches of Bali’s east coast.
You will be collected from the airport/hotel and driven to Sidemen, located in East Bali. This small village offers some of the most beautiful scenery in Bali. It is not visited by too many tourists and so remains unspoilt.
En route to Sidemen, we will make a few stops for you to enjoy some of the cultural sights and hidden gems on offer along the way.
The first stop is Kulngkung Palace & Taman Kerta Gosa. The palace dates back to the end of the 17th century. It was largely destroyed by the Dutch during their colonial conquest of Bali in 1908. Today all that remains are the court of justice, the Kerta Gosa Pavilion & the main gate.
The Klungkung kingdom was considered the highest and most important of the nine kingdoms of Bali during this period. The city was famed for its arts, painting, dance and music. At the end of the 18th century, the Kerta Gosa Pavilion was erected.
Typifying the Klungkung style of architecture and painting, the Kerta Gosa was the court of the high king of Bali. The paintings in the Pavillions are considered outstanding examples of the Kamasan style.
We continue to Sidemen, where we will find two hidden waterfalls which are not yet known to many tourists. As we want to keep these spots a secret, you will have to wait until the day to find out exactly where they are.
Check into your hotel and spend the evening at leisure
After breakfast, we will enjoy a nice leisurely walk through the countryside along rice terraces to reach a local Balinese home.
The women of the home are all experts at weaving fabric using the traditional ikat method. Ikat is a unique dying technique used to create patterns in the fabric. Sidemen is considered one of the best producers of ikat fabric in the world.
We continue our walk through the rice fields, stopping to speak to the local farmers and villagers along the way to find out more about the daily life in this beautiful Balinese village.
Our walk then brings us to a small forest where a picnic lunch awaits for you to enjoy under the forest canopy.
We return to the hotel, where you can enjoy some downtime and freshen up before our afternoon excursion to Besakih Temple, Bali's most cherished temple. The temple sits on the slopes of Mount Agung and spans a site of over 12 km-sq. Its unique design was built to fit within the mountain's contours.
Your guide will explain to you the 23 elements which make up the complex, including the impressive Penantaran Agung Temple, which has a wide staircase leading to a split gateway at the top.
Return to the hotel in the early evening and enjoy the afternoon at leisure.
Check out from your hotel in the early morning as you head out for a truly VIP experience. Exploring Tirta Gangga before it opens to the general public. Here, we can explore the beautiful water palace and its spectacular gardens without the crowds.
Tirta Gangga means water from the Ganges, and the palace is based on the beliefs in Balinese Hinduism, where the river Ganges and its waters are considered sacred. The one-hectare complex was built in 1946 by the late King of Karangasem, but the eruption of nearby Mount Agung in 1963, halted construction and destroyed most of the palace. Today, the palace has been restored to its preconceived splendour.
Your guide will lead you around the maze of pools and fountains surrounded by a lush garden and stone carvings and statues and will give you an insight into the days of the Balinese Rajahs.
Your morning concludes with a specially arranged breakfast overlooking the pools. Enjoy a light continental style breakfast of pastries, and fresh fruits, served alongside tea or coffee as you take in the tranquillity of this beautiful setting with very few people around.
If you would like to take a dip in one of the pools, you are free to do so, so please remember to pack a bathing suit.
Close by to Tirta Gangga is Puri Agung Karangasem, the main residential palace of the late Raja of Karangasem. Your guide will lead you through the place's three main parts and explain its unique architecture before driving onwards to the finishing village of Candidasa.
Check into your oceanside accommodation and spend the afternoon at leisure.
In the evening, you will be met by your driver and guide for a culinary adventure.
Led by one of Bali's most renowned chefs, you will eat, smell and feel your way through the town of Amlapura. Dine amongst the locals and learn about their culture while sampling a variety of Balinese dishes from street food stalls and night markets
With satisfied senses and full bellies, we return you to your hotel, where you can enjoy the rest of the night at your own leisure.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Blue Lagoon, located a short drive from your hotel.
Blue Lagoon Beach occupies a small bay about 1.5 km northeast of Padang Bai Port. Framed by green and rocky hills on both sides, this hidden beach attracts those looking for a quiet tropical escape.
On arrival at the beach, you will board a local boat and set sail for the area's famous reef. Your snorkelling guide will introduce you to the diverse marine life of one of the island's top spots for families and novice snorkelers.
The coral off the coast is home to exotic marine life, including Napoleon wrasse, reef shark, stonefish, moray and blue ribbon eels, nudibranchs, octopuses, and cuttlefish.
The water here enjoys mostly calm waves throughout the year, though it's best to swim at a higher tide due to the reef's proximity.
The best time for snorkelling, swimming, and sunbathing at Blue Lagoon Beach is during the dry season (April–October).
After snorkelling, you will drive east along the coastal road to Pasir Putih Beach (Virgin Beach). A white sand beach that is considered one of the most beautiful in Bali. Here we will enjoy a Picnic Lunch and some time to relax on the beach and play in the ocean.
Return to your hotel later in the afternoon.
Travel Designer Insights
East Bali is perfect for those wanting a slower pace of life full of local experiences.
The beaches in the East of Bali are mainly black volcanic sand, but don’t let that put you off as these black sand beaches are stunning in their own right as they sparkle and glisten under the Bali sun. In general, whilst the East sees plenty of visitors, it does remain far less commercial than the South and offers plenty of authenticity within a gorgeous landscape.
