Ayutthaya is one of Thailand’s majestic highlights. It was once one of the most glorified cities in Southeast Asia holding regional power for over 400 years. Visitors to Ayutthaya will marvel at its grandeur reflected in numerous temples and ruins concentrated in and around the city, which is located upon an island surrounded by the three rivers.

From Suvarnabhumi Airport, we travel to Ayutthaya (approx. 75 minutes). Upon arrival, proceed with check-in and the time is yours to settle and relax.

In the afternoon, we start our journey with a visit to Wat Chaiwatthanaram, a magnificent temple on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River - the building of which was ordered by King Prasat Thong in 1630 to honor his mother, and featuring the architectural style influenced by the Angkor temple in Cambodia.

The eye-catching layout includes a raised platform and eight towering chedis, all linked to secret passageways containing colorful paintings that illustrate the life of Buddha.

Next, a 15-min drive will take us to the outskirts of Ayutthaya, to travel back in time on a private luxurious vintage wooden boat along the Noi River. As the boat floats down the river, enjoy exquisite snacks and drinks (soft drinks and sparkling wine) while observing the local way of life.   Upon disembarking, indulge in a luxurious traditional Thai dinner experience before returning to your hotel.

After breakfast, we drive to Bang Pa-In Palace, also known as ‘the Summer Palace’, which was first used by the royal court as a summer retreat in the 17th century. However, the palace was destroyed with the fall of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya and was restored by King Rama IV in the middle of the 19th century. Most of the buildings that exist today date from the reign of King Rama V, who regularly spent his summers there. The structures represent architecture in various styles blended brilliantly to create a colorful symmetrical exterior and set in a large park around ponds and waterways, creating a fabulous scene.

Note: Long sleeves and trousers are required to enter the palace. Shoulders and knees should be covered during the temple visits.

We head north to the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park. Located in the heart of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a wonder to behold. Firstly, we will visit Wat Phra Mahathat which is famed for a large stone buddha head trapped in the exposed roots of a colossal banyan tree. Exactly how it got there remains mysterious until today.

We will stop for a delightful traditional Thai lunch at a local restaurant in town.

After lunch, we visit a local dessert shop where you can sample some traditional Thai sweets.

Then, continue our journey by local Tuk Tuk to Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, which was revered as the grandest, most beautiful temple when it served the Siamese capital more than 700 years ago. Comprising three ruined chedis, this temple remains until today as a remarkable testament to an old culture, and its architecture is simply captivating.

The last significant temple is Wat Lokaya Sutharam which houses the huge reclining Buddha, often wrapped in bright orange cloth. Even though it is very old, it is still in perfect condition with a lifelike face that beaming with happiness, the head supported by a lotus base platform. Upon finishing, we drive to Bangkok for check-in and freshening up.   This evening, we head to an exclusive Chef’s Table dining experience at the Penthouse Bar & Grill. You will need to enter via a discreet hidden doorway, where you will need to walk through the actual kitchen and past the chefs preparing food to access this exclusive space. One by one, the chefs from the kitchen will present each course to you as they curate your exclusive menu.

This morning, we start our day with a visit to Wat Ratchabophit. Built by King Rama V in 1896, this is the first temple with a mixture of fine local and western styles: colorful tiled rooftops, golden spires, and vaulting structures reminiscent of both traditional Thai architecture with gilded Italian influence. The exterior of the chapel represents the Thai aspect while the interior is decorated in a more European style.

Next, we drive to Pak Klong Talad, Thailand’s largest flower market where flowers from around Thailand arrive before being distributed to hotels, restaurants, and small retailers. At this bustling, colorful market you will find everything from local jasmine to imported red roses.

We spend a little time wandering around before stopping at a Café to grab a refreshing drink. Here, we will learn how to hand-craft a lotus petal as an offering to be made to Lord Buddha later in the day.

Then, we continue to visit Wat Suthat, one of the oldest and most impressive temples in Bangkok. It has an elegant prayer hall with sweeping roofs, magnificent murals, and exquisite hand-carved teakwood door panels. Wat Suthat is also widely known for the towering red Giant Swing standing strikingly at its entrance.

After paying homage to our Lord Buddha with the beautiful lotus petal you made earlier, we will walk along the so-called ‘buddha street’. Here religious amulets, charms, talismans, and traditional medicine are displayed on the ground for buyers to browse and are believed to bring good luck or ward off evil. Amulets have a very deep meaning in Buddhism/Thai culture, and each has a specific purpose: to bring money, restore health, help with love conquests or keep your enemies away… Choose yours wisely

Hop on a local Tuk-Tuk to Nang Loeng market where you can find the capital’s very best street food scene. Here, you will have a chance to make a delicious traditional Thai coconut dessert.

Later, we head to Raweekanlaya restaurant for an authentic Thai lunch. Being the house of the Royal Governess of King Rama VI, Raweekanlaya reminiscences on the transitional cuisines of their time and brings alive the best of both western and Thai culinary experiences.

After lunch we visit the Grand Palace, a former royal residence that was consecrated in 1782. Today, it is only used on ceremonial occasions, but it remains the city’s biggest attraction and a pilgrimage destination for devout Buddhists. We will spend some time exploring the grandeur and majesty of the palace, its throne hall, and the most revered Emerald Buddha image, before moving onwards to Wat Pho.

Being one of the largest temple complexes in the city, Wat Pho is famed for its giant reclining Buddha that is 46 meters long, covered in gold leaf.

Then you will have the opportunity to sit and listen to surreal sounds of the monks chanting while they perform their evening rituals - close your eyes and lose yourself in the ambience.

This early evening, step aboard our elegant Hacker-Craft boat to take in the illuminated cityscape and the tranquility of the magnificent Chao Phraya River as the sun dips beyond the horizon. This striking boat is hand-built with the best mahogany wood to perfectly balance luxury, utility and comfort.

Enjoy a scenic 1-hour river ride and stop along the way to admire Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) and its magnificent multicoloured porcelain-studded towers which have become an icon of Bangkok, with the Chao Praya River in the foreground - a perfect way to end the day.   Return to your hotel upon disembarkation.

In the early afternoon, we drive for the signature afternoon tea at a riverside restaurant. Spoil your taste buds with carefully crafted desserts, finger sandwiches, and classic scones, whilst enjoying live Thai Traditional music.

Now, get ready for a truly exclusive opportunity to see Bangkok by private helicopter, taking off from the rooftop Helipad of the Peninsula Hotel. Capture magnificent views over the Bangkok skyline and soak in unrevealed views that many never have the privilege of seeing along the length of the Chao Phraya River (Note: flight time is 20 minutes).

Upon landing, we will enjoy a luxurious dinner at a restaurant by the Chao Phraya River.

Return to your hotel or hop on a boat to explore Chinatown at night.

Bangkok is known as ‘city that never sleeps’ with some areas being busier at night than during the day. China Town is one of them - As soon as it gets dark, street vendors, restaurants, night markets, and bars fill up with regular patrons.   Note: If you wish to explore the bustling Chinatown after the tour, don’t forget to discuss various options on the other side of the river with your Travel Expert. There are numerous street food stalls, restaurants and hidden bars waiting to be explored (For some dining experiences a table reservation is highly recommended).
