An 8 day / 7 night high end program beginning in Phnom Penh and then incorporating the top luxury jungle resort in Asia followed by a relaxing beach stay at one of the finest South-coast island resorts.
This overland program is perfect for those who have already visited the Temples of Angkor and wish to explore deeper into Cambodia and soak up some of its tropical paradise. Starting with a fun stay in the fast-growing capital of Phnom Penh, then experience the delights of the top jungle resort in Asia. This all-inclusive experience in the wilderness is then followed by a relaxing stay at Song Saa, Cambodia’s premier coastal hideaway, to enjoy the unspoilt beauty of the Cambodian islands and beaches.
Arrive into Phnom Penh and be greeted on arrival by your local Travel Expert who will whisk you off on an exploration of the city.
First visit the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), a former high school close to the centre of town. In the Pol Pot/Khmer Rouge period (1975-1979) the school was used as a detention centre for political and civil prisoners, the majority of whom perished under cruel interrogation and torture. The Museum stands as a testament to the deceased and the brutal ideology of the Khmer Rouge movement.
After this sobering experience, we then take a stroll through the nearby Russian Market (Psah Tuol Tom Pong), a lively indoor and outdoor market where you will find antiquities, silver and gold jewellery, gems, silk, kramars, stone and wood carvings, as well as T-Shirts, and cheap designer clothing and accessories (of varying quality) that have found their way there from the Phnom Penh Garment factories. A quick local lunch – perhaps sampling some local street food noodle coup for the adventurous, then check into your hotel.
The program can be extended with visits to the Royal Palace and National Museum if time and interest allows.
In the evening we venture out into the exotic tropical night to enjoy the sights, smells, sounds, tastes, and atmosphere of Phnom Penh on a ride around by tuk tuk, known locally as a ‘remork’.
Led by your informative Travel Expert, start with a cocktail while soaking up the stunning panoramic views of this fast-developing city, before making multiple stops to local markets and small street-side vendors; tasting the very best of Cambodian street food. For the main meal, sample traditional cuisine while listening to songs from the 1960s, Cambodia’s golden era of music, at a vibrant live music restaurant. After one final secret dessert stop, return to the hotel or continue to one of Phnom Penh’s trendy late-night spots if the mood dictates. .
After breakfast we begin our overland journey out of Phone Penh through the foothills of the vast Cardamom Mountain range and the National Park of Kirirom.
Despite the ongoing threat of logging the Cardamoms remain home to a vast array of rare animals and tropical flora. And thanks to the recent upgrade of roads and more community-based tourism projects cropping up, the tourist stream is starting to slowly trickle into the remote area. While much of the dense forest remains off limits to tourists – or humans in general – there are plenty of pockets to explore that showcase the area’s biodiversity in all its glory.
Its rugged landscape, which takes in mountains, marshes, plains and gushing rivers, make it the perfect stomping ground for the vast collection of rare and endangered species that call it home. These include elephants, tigers – although spotting one is highly unlikely – sun bears, Siamese crocodiles, gibbons and clouded leopards.
Our immediate destination is the well regarded and luxurious Shinta Mani Wild tented camp - a radical new fusion of world-class design, hospitality and conservation. The camp was born when world-renowned designer Bill Bensley identified an unprotected, 350-hectare wildlife corridor – and set out to save it from poaching, mining and logging. Among the lush jungles, waterfalls and rivers are 15 beautifully-designed luxury tents that individually resemble Jackie O Kennedy’s 1967 iconic safari to the Kingdom of Cambodia. It’s a little bit of elegance, a little bit of nature and a whole lot of Bensley. Enjoy an afternoon exploring the waterways of South East Asia’s last wild estuarine ecosystem on our Bensley pontoon boats, or accompany rangers and researchers as they check the lands for illegal activity. For others who wish to take things easier enjoy the Boulders Spa that offer a full range of treatments in the tranquillity of the lush surroundings. .
Tent Description
100sqm, custom designed tents are perched over the swift moving waters and waterfalls, providing a view and experience unlike any other resort in Asia. Each tent has been meticulously designed to invoke the feeling of what it would have been like to be on a luxury safari in the jungles of Cambodia with Jacky Onassis.
A full range of activities are included in the accommodation rate (minimum stay 3 nights). Depending on the season, Shinta Mani Wild always has plenty of activities available for guests to choose from; a few of which are are below:
Wildlife Alliance Rangers Anti Poaching Patrol
Guests that share Bensley Collection - Shinta Mani Wild’s passion for protecting its precious natural environment might find themselves joining Wildlife Alliance rangers motorcycling through the forest on anti-poaching patrols. Funded by Shinta Mani, the camp’s ranger station enables the non-profit Wildlife Alliance to carry out vital conservation work in the area, including protecting animals from poaching, removing snares, protecting the National Park from encroachment and preventing illegal logging.
Butterfly Walk
The WILD Sanctuary is home to over 140 species of butterflies, some that congregate in a flutter numbering in the hundreds – a colorful feast for the senses. Your Bensley Butler will personally guide you on this property hike and share our passion for butterflies with you Jungle Trekking The 800 acres that comprises WILD sits within the 4.5 million acres of the Southern Cardamom National Park. The opportunities are endless and are only limited by what you want to do. From easy walks on riverside trails on the WILD property to full day, hardcore slogs into the Cardamom interior our Bensley Adventure Rangers will happily guide you on the adventure of your choosing
Expedition River Travel
Nautical types can take to the water aboard our custom built expedition boat, ideal for exploring the secret backwaters of the upper Srey Ambel Estuary and connecting waterways. In true Bensley fashion the expedition boat has every comfort from day beds to spot birds from and sun beds on the roof to get the ideal perspective. The boat moves its base depending on water levels and is currently moored a 45 minutes’ drive from the camp. Early risers are treated to a sunrise breakfast either on board or on a secluded beach, if sleeping in is more your thing enjoy a drink watching the colors change as the sun sets on another day of adventure.
Kayaking
The Southern Cardamom rainforest has some of the highest annual rainfall in South East Asia. All that water drains off to the Gulf of Thailand through a massive system of rivers and estuaries creating many opportunities for flat water kayaking. Guides have explored this region for several years now and have only scratched the surface of the different kayaking routes available.
The best opportunities for bird watching are along these barely used routes where the rare encounter with a fisherman will surely be a surprise and delight. Options are only limited by water levels and your curiosity.
Mountain Biking WILD and the surrounding jungles have mountain biking opportunities for riders of all skill levels. Looking for a virgin run on forest single track or perhaps a less arduous ride through a Khmer village, the adventure butlers love getting out on two wheels. About an hour drive from the Camp is the Kirirom Reservoir that offers a challenging uphill ride and an exhilarating downhill sprint. Other on site activities are also available for those that did not wish to stray far from the camp.
After the three days spent exploring the National Park your Travel Expert will be on hand to escort you to one of the luxurious island resorts off the Southern Coast.
Assistance will be provided to facilitate travel to your onward destination. Today we have the longest drive of the trip as we head west for approximately four hours to the seaside city of Sihanoukville. As the town is heavily developed we don’t spend time here and merely transit straight through to the pier.
From there we board a boat to cruise out to Song Saa Private Island, still Cambodia’s premier beach hideaway and well regarded as one of Asia’s finest.
The Islands of Cambodia reman a truly pristine unspoilt paradise, with tourism beyond a few intrepid backpackers only having started to take off before the events of early 2020.
It can now be argued that Cambodia is now one of the best and most accessible beach destinations in Asia - and there’s a lot of competition…. you will not be disappointed.
Avoiding crowds and enjoying the beach in peace and quiet is not an issue here, as there have never yet been crowds to avoid.
