A 4 Day / 3 Night immersion into Shanghai’s architecture, neighbourhood life, rituals and riverside culture.
This four-day immersion invites us into a city shaped by many worlds. We move fluidly between illuminated riverfronts, textured backstreets, morning rituals, marketplaces and the quiet heritage of nearby water towns. Each experience reveals a different face of Shanghai — from the architectural legacy of its international past to the rhythm of neighbourhood life unfolding in real time. The result is a curated and unhurried introduction to a place defined by contrast, culture and constant reinvention.

Our journey into Shanghai begins with a warm welcome at the airport or train station, where our travel expert meets us on arrival and transfers us comfortably to your hotel. The drive offers a first impression of the city’s contrasts: illuminated towers rising beyond older rooftops, tree-lined boulevards unfolding beside contemporary districts and glimpses of the Huangpu River that has shaped Shanghai’s evolving story. After check-in, there is time to relax, refresh and ease into the rhythm of the evening.
As night descends, our travel expert returns to escort us to our bicycles for an elegant, historically focused cycling experience centred around the Bund. Moving at a gentle pace, we follow the riverfront promenade where the grand facades of the former Shanghai International Settlement glow beneath soft golden lighting. Neoclassical banks, Beaux-Arts trading houses and Art Deco clubs feel especially striking at night, when carved stonework and sculpted columns take on greater depth. Our travel expert shares insight into the foreign influences that shaped this iconic waterfront and the architectural legacy that remains today.
A short detour leads us into quieter backstreets behind the Bund, where narrow lanes preserve fragments of Old Shanghai. Heritage shophouses, modest brick dwellings and tucked-away courtyards reveal how local communities once lived beside these monumental riverfront structures, creating a contrast that adds meaning to the evening’s exploration.
Returning to the water’s edge, the view widens toward Pudong’s illuminated skyline, its futuristic towers shimmering in vivid tones. The experience concludes at a refined rooftop bar within a beautifully restored heritage building. Here we settle into a reserved table for cocktails and dinner, enjoying uninterrupted views of both the Bund’s glowing facades and the modern silhouettes across the river. When ready, our travel expert arranges a smooth transfer back to your hotel.

The morning begins in the calm of the Jade Buddha Temple, one of Shanghai’s most significant spiritual landmarks. Our travel expert meets us at your hotel and brings us into the soft rhythm of the temple’s early hours. We begin by observing the monks’ morning chanting, a resonant ritual that fills the halls with a steady, meditative cadence. Incense drifts through courtyards, light filters across carved latticework and the temple’s jade Buddhas radiate a quiet, luminous presence.
After the chanting, we take part in a guided sutra-copying session — a reflective practice that encourages focus and stillness. The gentle brushstrokes draw us into the moment, allowing the temple’s calm atmosphere to settle naturally around us. We then explore the surrounding halls, where our travel expert highlights the symbolism, architecture and long-standing spiritual traditions that have shaped this community.
Lunch is enjoyed at a local restaurant before we are met by a new mode of transport — an open-top jeep — for this afternoon’s discovery of the French Concession. With our travel expert by our side, the journey unfolds through tree-lined streets shaped by European influence and Shanghainese heritage. Elegant villas, shaded boulevards and restored residences create a setting rich in architectural character and cultural memory.
A stop at the historic French Club offers sweeping views across both heritage neighbourhoods and the modern skyline beyond, capturing the cosmopolitan spirit that once defined this district. From here, the jeep carries us into lilong and shikumen alleyways where daily life continues in narrow lanes lined with shared courtyards, balconies and familiar exchanges between neighbours. The contrast between these lived-in communities and the refined avenues experienced earlier adds depth to the day’s exploration.
We conclude with time in lively neighbourhood markets where colour, conversation and movement animate each corner. By the end of the afternoon, we have experienced two distinct yet complementary sides of Shanghai — its spiritual heritage and its cultural diversity expressed through streets, lanes and architecture.

Shanghai wakes early, and this morning’s experience follows the neighbourhood rhythms that unfold at first light. Our travel expert meets us just as the streets begin to stir, guiding us into narrow alleyways where residents prepare for their day. Steam rises from small kitchens, bicycles roll past with baskets of fresh produce and neighbours exchange warm greetings as shutters lift. The early light softens the scene, creating an atmosphere that feels timeless despite the city’s rapid evolution.
We soon arrive at a bustling wet market at the heart of local morning life. Stalls overflow with seasonal vegetables, fresh herbs, seafood, noodles and aromatic spices. Vendors call out to familiar customers, small negotiations take place over ingredients and lively conversations reveal the market’s role in shaping daily routines. The colours, aromas and human interactions highlight the foundations of Shanghai’s culinary heritage.
From the market, our walk continues to street-side kitchens where classic breakfast dishes are made fresh each day. Scallion pancakes crackle on hot griddles, jianbing are folded with herbs and savoury fillings and clay ovens warm sesame bread to a comforting aroma. Our travel expert shares stories of migration, flavours and family tradition that have shaped these beloved dishes over generations.
After a short break, we shift into the afternoon with a visit to the Jewish Quarter — one of Shanghai’s most remarkable historical chapters. Our travel expert leads us through the quiet streets where thousands of Jewish refugees found safety during the Second World War. We pass landmarks such as the Broadway Theatre before continuing to the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, where personal artefacts, photographs and moving testimonies preserve the experiences of those who lived through these years. The narrative is both historical and deeply human, revealing Shanghai’s role as a city of refuge in a time of global darkness.
By the end of the day, we have explored two different sides of Shanghai — the warmth of its morning rituals and the profound humanity of its multicultural past.

Our final day in Shanghai moves through experiences that reveal the city’s gentler rhythms and the balance between urban momentum and long-standing tradition. We begin in one of the city’s central parks, where residents gather for tai chi, stretching, fan dancing and early-morning conversation. The atmosphere is calm and communal, offering a soft start to the day and a glimpse into how locals welcome the morning. There is an ease here that contrasts beautifully with the energy found elsewhere in the city.
From the park, we continue through surrounding neighbourhoods, where market stalls open for the day and familiar routines unfold along leafy streets. Vendors arrange fresh produce, neighbours chat over breakfast noodles and small temples tucked between shopfronts quietly receive their first visitors. These scenes offer a grounded look at the everyday life that shapes Shanghai beyond its iconic skyline.
Late morning brings a shift as we travel to a nearby water town. Narrow lanes, stone bridges and calm canals reveal a slower lifestyle shaped by waterways and community. Locals sit at open doorways, boats glide beneath low arches and handmade crafts appear in small, welcoming shopfronts. A canal-side teahouse offers time to pause before lunch and watch daily life unfold at an unhurried pace, with the sound of water guiding the mood. After lunch, our travel expert transfers us directly to the airport or train station for onward travel, ensuring we arrive comfortably and in good time for departure.
